According to reports, after 14 days of an intense search, the body of Lucas Gámez, a 9-year-old Argentine boy trapped under the rubble of the Miramar building in La Guaira, Venezuela, was found lifeless. The tragedy, caused by the double earthquake on June 24, 2026, has deeply moved both South American nations.
To provide some geographical context, La Guaira is a coastal state in Venezuela, located near the capital, Caracas. The boy was enjoying a day at the beach at his grandparents' house when the devastating earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck the region. His parents, psychologist Blanca Martínez and Marco Gámez, had returned to Venezuela in January 2026 after living for several years in Argentina, where Lucas was born.
'Just me, who talks about death with my cancer patients as a natural process we should embrace. Just me, who always talked to Lucas about death without demonizing it. Now I swallow my words... because mourning a child, I believe, is one of the most painful things that exist in life.'
This message, shared on Blanca Martínez's social media, reflects the profound pain of a professional accustomed to dealing with life's finitude, now facing her own unimaginable tragedy. In her post, accompanied by a photo of Lucas at the beach, she described her situation as an 'emotional disaster' and her pain as something 'deep and black.'
Despite the immense sorrow, Blanca closed her message with a beacon of hope towards her son's memory: 'I am going to build something wonderful for you, my son. I don't know how or when, but I will do it.' Furthermore, she expressed her hope for a future reunion: 'I will meet you again at some point, my prince.'
The discovery took place on July 8, 2026, when heavy machinery allowed access to the deepest zones of the rubble. Lucas's body was found alongside his grandparents'. His father, Marco Gámez, had previously thanked the rescue teams and kept his faith alive throughout the operation, which also counted with the help of Argentine specialists.
Tragically, Lucas had turned 9 years old on July 6 while his parents waited at an improvised camp at the disaster site, where they sang 'Happy Birthday' to him.
