Just days before the start of the winter break, a deputy from the PRO party presented a project to eliminate the two-week recess in the Legislature of Mendoza. The initiative has opened a debate regarding the work regime of legislators, which the author described as a "privilege" that is out of touch with the reality of the people.
The lawmaker driving the proposal is Cintia Gómez, who pointed out that some deputies assumed their seats in May 2026, worked barely two months, and already have two weeks of vacation. The scheduled recess runs from July 6 to July 22.
Gómez highlighted the disparity with the private sector: "In the private sector, one must have more than 10 years of seniority to get the same amount of vacation time". She compared this to legislators who take office in November and by the end of December already have 30 days of vacation.
Mendoza is a key province in Argentina, located in the Cuyo region, famous for its wine production and tourism. Its legislature is one of the most active in the country, functioning from February 1 to December 31.
Opponents of the bill argue that the winter recess was agreed in paritarias (collective bargaining negotiations) with administrative staff. They note that without these workers, sessions cannot be held. Gómez countered this argument: "I do not intend to violate anyone's labor rights... How do hospitals or security forces manage to work during vacations?", suggesting replacements could be used.
The project was submitted to the provincial Legislature on June 29, 2026. The legislative winter break (receso de invierno) is a traditional period where parliamentary activities pause in Argentina, usually coinciding with school holidays in July.
