The community of Groningen, a historic university city in the northern Netherlands, is in shock after a double homicide committed by a couple's own daughter, a 15-year-old teenager. The incident occurred during the early hours of June 18, 2024 at the family home in Meerstad, a residential area near Groningen known for its modern housing developments and lakes.
The victims were identified as Johan and Mathilda, both 53 years old. According to local media cited by Crónica and La Gaceta, the bodies were found inside the residence after authorities received an emergency call. Police arrived at approximately 1:30 AM.
The mayor of Groningen, Roelien Kamminga, described the event as a "tragic event" and urged the public not to share crime scene images.
"They don't help anyone. Understand their impact and share them only with the police", stated the official, according to De Telegraaf, the Netherlands' largest newspaper.
Classmates at the Montessori Vocational Lyceum in Groningen described the young woman as identifying with the therian subculture. This term refers to individuals who feel a spiritual or psychological connection with one or more animals, identifying as such in a non-physical sense. Unlike furries (fans of anthropomorphic animal characters), therians believe they spiritually or psychologically are animals.
Testimonies cited by Dutch media indicate the teenager attended school wearing ears, a tail, and gloves mimicking paws, walked on all fours through hallways, and made sounds similar to barking. Other students described her as increasingly isolated, with prolonged school absences.
According to local media reports, the family's golden retriever was found with injuries requiring veterinary care. There are also unconfirmed reports about a previous incident with another family pet.
The Dutch Public Prosecution Service is investigating the case as a double murder. The minor remains in isolation, permitted only contact with her lawyer.
Authorities are analyzing phones, communications, and the teenager's personal circle to reconstruct the hours before and after the couple's death.
Johan and Mathilda's relatives released a statement expressing they "can barely comprehend" what happened:
"We hope everyone understands that we are deeply affected by the tragic events surrounding Johan and Mathilda's death. But the support and sympathy we've received from many helps and comforts us."
Neighbors described the family as "the kindest people in the world" and noted they were preparing to move after selling their property.
