Defensor argentino Facundo Medina celebrando con la camiseta de la selección en un estadio de Mundial, ambiente festivo con banderas argentinas
The night of June 16, 2026 will be forever etched in Facundo Medina's memory. The Argentine defender fulfilled his dream of playing in a World Cup, and did so in the best possible way: as a starter in the lineup that Lionel Scaloni prepared for the opening match against Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
The Argentine coach surprised everyone by confirming Medina in the starting eleven over Nicolás Otamendi, a historic defender for the national team. Scaloni's bet paid off: Argentina defeated Algeria 3-0 with a historic hat-trick by Lionel Messi (minutes 16', 59', and 75').
The starting lineup was: Emiliano Martínez; Nahuel Molina, Cuti Romero, Lisandro Martínez, Facundo Medina; Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, Thiago Almada; Lionel Messi, and Lautaro Martínez.
After the game, Medina didn't hide his emotion in the locker room: "It's always an honor to wear this jersey and represent our country."
About his captain, the defender was eloquent: "Messi makes everything look easy. We see it in training, everyone already knows, there's nothing more to add, it's all there for everyone to see."

Medina's story is a testament to personal triumph over adversity. Born in Villa Fiorito, one of the most humble neighborhoods in Greater Buenos Aires—an area famous for producing football talents despite economic hardships—the defender experienced a childhood marked by sacrifice and hard work.
In Argentina, cartoneros are informal waste collectors who gather recyclable materials—primarily cardboard, paper, and plastics—from streets and garbage bins to sell to recycling centers. It's honest but physically demanding work that many families in marginalized neighborhoods rely on for survival. Medina's experience reflects the determination of countless Argentine families working to build better futures for their children.
In previous interviews, Medina recalled: "We went out Monday through Friday, it was a family job. Fortunately we had food, but we had to get out and hustle." He was referring to his work as a cartonero alongside his family members during his childhood.
On January 26, 2018, Medina took a significant step forward in his career by joining Talleres de Córdoba, one of Argentina's most historic clubs outside Buenos Aires. The club acquired 65% of his transfer rights. At "La T" (the club's nickname), he found consistency, growth, and competitive experience.
His outstanding performance in Córdoba caught the attention of European football, paving the way for his eventual transfer to France, where he established himself as an international-caliber defender.
Currently, Medina plays for Olympique de Marseille in France's Ligue 1—one of Europe's top five leagues—where he has solidified his status after a successful stint at RC Lens. His solid present in European football positioned him as a reliable option for Scaloni heading into the 2026 World Cup.
Playing in France's top division against world-class forwards prepared him for football's biggest stage.
Argentina competes in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. Following their 3-0 victory, the national team leads the group with 3 points and a +3 goal difference.
