A Hidden Cardiovascular Danger for Women

The Hospital de Clínicas de Buenos Aires (a prominent university hospital affiliated with the University of Buenos Aires, often considered one of the most prestigious medical institutions in Argentina) has issued an important health alert: 52% of women over the age of 50 show signs of atherosclerosis. This condition, which progresses silently, can lead to serious cardiovascular events like heart attacks or strokes (cerebrovascular accidents).

Atherosclerosis is the hardening and narrowing of the arteries caused by the buildup of cholesterol plaques, calcium, and other substances on arterial walls. This reduces blood flow and can cause complete blockages.

Understanding Atherosclerosis

It is a chronic disease that develops gradually. Arteries become rigid and less elastic due to the accumulation of atheromatous plaque on their inner walls.

  • First Stage: Formation of fatty streaks in the arterial wall
  • Second Stage: Accumulation of LDL cholesterol and inflammatory cells
  • Third Stage: Formation of stable atherosclerotic plaque
  • Fourth Stage: Possible plaque rupture and thrombosis (blood clots)

Major Risk Factors

In postmenopausal women, the loss of estrogen significantly increases cardiovascular risk:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Elevated cholesterol (High LDL, Low HDL)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Sedentary lifestyle and obesity
  • Family history of cardiovascular disease

Why is it a 'Hidden Risk'?

Unlike men, women often present different or atypical symptoms, making early diagnosis difficult. Atherosclerosis can advance for decades without showing clear signs until an acute event occurs.

Specialists at the Hospital de Clínicas noted that primary prevention in women is underdiagnosed. Routine cardiovascular checkups often focus on the male population, leaving a vulnerable group unprotected.

Prevention Recommendations

Periodic Medical Checkups
  • Blood pressure check every 6 months
  • Lipid profile analysis (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides)
  • Fasting blood glucose test
  • Cardiovascular risk assessment using validated scales
Lifestyle Changes
  • Heart-healthy diet (Mediterranean or DASH diet)
  • Moderate physical activity 150 minutes per week
  • Smoking cessation
  • Stress control and restorative sleep
