Argentina's automotive market showed clear signs of recovery in June 2026 after a prolonged period of contraction. According to data released by the Association of Automobile Dealers of the Argentine Republic (ACARA), 45,995 units were registered, representing a 7.2% monthly increase compared to May.
For international readers, patentamiento refers to the official vehicle registration process when a new car is first registered with authorities - the standard metric for tracking new car sales in Argentina. This rebound is seen by industry insiders as a potential turning point for the 0 km (brand new) vehicle market, which has been navigating challenging economic conditions.
It's worth noting that May was the worst month of the year for the market, with only 41,921 units registered, marking declines of 25.6% year-over-year and 12.2% month-over-month.
Despite the monthly recovery, comparison with June 2025 shows a 12.8% decline, when 52,730 units were registered.
Year-to-date figures show the first semester accumulated 294,181 units, representing a 9.9% decrease versus the same period last year (326,549 units).
A key insight from the report reveals the market composition:

Toyota Hilux consolidates its position as Argentina's best-selling pickup, accumulating 15,549 units in the first semester and maintaining absolute market leadership. The Hilux has been Argentina's top-selling vehicle for years, reflecting the country's strong pickup culture.
The light vehicle segment was led by Toyota (6,775 units), followed by Volkswagen (5,487 units) and Fiat (5,226 units). Notably, Chinese manufacturer BYD entered the top 10 brands, signaling growing acceptance of electric vehicles in Argentina.
Argentina's second-largest industrial hub registered 4,772 vehicles (+2.9% monthly), maintaining its position as the third-largest market nationally with 10.4% of total registrations, behind Buenos Aires Province and the City of Buenos Aires.
Sebastián Beato, President of ACARA, expressed measured optimism: "The first part of the year was marked by excess inventory, demand uncertainty, and intense price competition. However, after months of deceleration, manufacturers and dealerships are adjusting, and we're already seeing recovery signals on the horizon."
The executive noted that customers continue evaluating their decisions, awaiting interest rate reductions or new financing options. "The key tools we need are long-term financing, rate reductions, or zero-interest options, along with price and tax transparency," he added. Argentina's automotive market remains highly sensitive to financing conditions, as most vehicle purchases rely on installment plans.
