Argentina's President Javier Milei faces a decisive week on both political and diplomatic fronts. After confirming Diego Santilli as the new Cabinet Chief of Ministers, replacing Manuel Adorni, the president must define his participation in key international events while the Government seeks to reorganize after the crisis triggered by the patrimonial scandal of the now former official.
Santilli's swearing-in, scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at 5:30 PM at the Salón Blanco (White Hall) of Casa Rosada —Argentina's Government House— marks a turning point in the administration. The until-now Minister of Interior was confirmed after a meeting at Quinta de Olivos —the presidential residence— with Milei and his sister, the General Secretary of the Presidency, Karina Milei, who publicly thanked him for accepting the position.
On the same Tuesday, June 30, but in the morning, the Mercosur Leaders' Summit will take place in Asunción, Paraguay. Heads of state must arrive at the CONMEBOL Convention Center at 8:00 AM, with the plenary session extending until 1:15 PM.
According to Infobae, Milei has not yet defined whether he will attend personally or if Argentina's representation will be in the hands of Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno. If he decides to go and returns immediately to Buenos Aires, he would arrive just in time to swear in Santilli.
Additionally, the president had planned to travel on Friday, July 3, 2026 to the United States to participate in the 250th anniversary of that country's independence. He could advance his departure to attend a previous event led by Donald Trump on July 3rd itself.
Santilli has already begun preparing for his new role. He will meet on Monday with Ignacio Devitt, who will be his Deputy Cabinet Chief, to outline the area's structure. On Wednesday, he will formally begin his duties by receiving deputies and senators from La Libertad Avanza —Milei's political party— at Balcarce 50, the parliamentary administrative building.
The political committee will continue functioning, but without Adorni's presence. Milei again backed the former official: "I still trust Manuel's innocence. He is an honest person," he declared to LN+ channel.
General Secretary Karina Milei —the president's sister and key political operator— will seek greater influence in parliamentary negotiations. She was added to the WhatsApp groups of the deputies and senators' blocs, and trusts Santilli and Devitt for negotiations with legislators and governors.
Manuel Adorni resigned on June 27, 2026 after the dissemination of a 775% patrimonial increase (from $20 million pesos to $944 million pesos) and the existence of USD 500,000 in undeclared cryptocurrencies. An audio also emerged in which he offered help to his contractor Matías Tabar before declaring before prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita. A censorship motion accumulated 120 signatures of the 129 necessary.
