Most modern smartphones include a feature called Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), which allows devices to connect to a network without knowing the password. This standard was created in 2006 by the Wi-Fi Alliance to simplify the connection process for users.
The system works through a physical button on your router. When pressed, it allows any nearby device to connect automatically for a limited time period (usually 2 minutes). This is particularly useful when you have guests at home or when you're setting up new devices like smart TVs, printers, or gaming consoles.
Note: The WPS button is typically labeled and may have a symbol that looks like two arrows forming a circle.
| Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|
| Fast and easy connection | Lower security level |
| Perfect for guests | Only works on compatible routers |
| No need to share your password | Known vulnerability (WPS attack) |
Beyond WPS, there are other convenient methods to connect devices without typing passwords:
Many modern routers generate QR codes that you can simply scan with your smartphone camera to connect instantly. This method is becoming increasingly popular in cafes, hotels, and airports around the world.
Some devices allow connection through Near Field Communication by simply tapping your phone near the router. This is common in smart home devices and some business environments.
Both Android and iOS allow you to share Wi-Fi connections with nearby devices using Bluetooth or QR codes. Perfect for when friends visit your home!
