The Argentine Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Argentina) is about to reach a historic milestone: on July 3, 2026, the First Solo Flight ceremony for Argentine pilots at the controls of F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters acquired from Denmark will take place. This achievement represents a fundamental step in the process of incorporating the new weapons system that will modernize the country's air defense capabilities.
According to information released by media in Río Cuarto, the first solo flights would have already taken place during the previous week, and the official ceremony seeks to publicly recognize this transcendental progress. The Chief of the General Staff of the Air Force had anticipated months earlier that one of the program's immediate objectives was to achieve the first solo flight by national pilots.
The solo flight is part of the various stages planned for the training of Argentine crews on the F-16. The process is being developed with support from specialists at Top Aces, the company responsible for accompanying instruction and operational conversion activities in the country.
The aircraft arrived in Argentina in December 2025 and were initially deployed at Área Material Río Cuarto, in the province of Córdoba (located in Argentina's central region), where pilot training and the process of putting the weapons system into service are being developed.
The VI Air Brigade of Tandil was designated as the definitive headquarters for the F-16s, but infrastructure works are not yet complete. A central runway, new hangars, and technical and maintenance areas are being built.
The 2026 budget allocates $20,000 million Argentine pesos (approximately USD 20 million at official exchange rates) for modernization works in Tandil and work in Río Cuarto. Military sources indicated that most resources were allocated to works at the Córdoba unit.
| Concept | Detail |
|---|---|
| Supplier Country | Denmark |
| Total Aircraft | 24 F-16 fighter jets with supersonic capability |
| Total Cost | US$ 301.2 million |
| Payments Made 3 of 5 annual installments (approximately US$ 180 million) | |
| Generation | Fourth generation with US military equipment |
| Temporary Headquarters | Área Material Río Cuarto, Córdoba Province |
| Definitive Headquarters | VI Air Brigade of Tandil (under construction) |
The progress in pilot training coincides with another relevant development: the United States Air Force awarded a contract for the provision of AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile), weaponry destined for various allied countries, including Argentina, as part of the capability package planned for the F-16s.
This equipment is part of the integral process of putting the new weapons system into service and accompanies the progress recorded both in crew training and in the availability of future combat assets.
The First Solo Flight is a fundamental tradition in military pilot training. It represents the moment when a student performs their first flight without an instructor on board, demonstrating they possess the necessary skills to operate the aircraft autonomously. It is considered one of the most important milestones in a combat aviator's career.
Tandil is a city located in Buenos Aires Province, approximately 400 kilometers south of Buenos Aires city. It is known for its aerospace industry and houses the VI Air Brigade, responsible for air defense of the southern metropolitan area.
Río Cuarto is located in Córdoba Province, about 700 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires. It houses the Área Material Río Cuarto, an important logistics and maintenance center for the Argentine Air Force.
