More than two weeks after the disappearance of five fishermen in the Río de la Plata, authorities confirmed the discovery of a new body in the Punta Indio area. The corpse was located around midday on Sunday, June 28, 2026, following intense air and water searches in the region.
According to official sources, during the identification operation with family assistance, it was established that the body belonged to Carlos Kovach, aged 60, brother of Claudio Kovach, another member of the vessel "Chamigo-Ho" that disappeared weeks earlier.

The extensive search operation continues with the participation of Argentine Naval Prefecture (the country's coast guard), Firefighters, and various police forces, who are scouring different sectors of the Río de la Plata.
Hours before the discovery of Carlos Kovach's body, a security forces aircraft had spotted a body floating in the area, but vessels that immediately headed to the location were unable to locate it at first. Finally, after deepening the search efforts, brigadiers managed to recover the body.
The deployment with maritime and air media covered quadrants from Hudson to the beaches of Berisso, Ensenada, and Magdalena - all coastal towns in Buenos Aires Province. On one of the days, the Prefecture incorporated the Papa Alpha 62 aircraft, which flew over more than 110 kilometers of the Río de la Plata coastline.
Days earlier, in the Uruguayan side of the Río de la Plata, the body of Sebastián Romegialli (50 years old) was found. The discovery occurred approximately 85 kilometers from Atalaya, in the Magdalena district, one of the areas where much of the search efforts had been concentrated.
The alert was issued by a ship navigating near the coast of Montevideo (Uruguay's capital) when they spotted the body. The crew notified Uruguayan authorities, who then involved Argentine authorities.
According to Infobae, Romegialli's body had two matching tattoos with one of the missing fishermen, which allowed for identification. Uruguayan Justice requested DNA tests to confirm the identity.
In the town of Atalaya, a backpack and a fuel container were recovered, which family members recognized as belonging to the vessel "Chamigo-Ho". These items reinforced the hypothesis that currents had dragged the boat southward in the Río de la Plata.
The judicial case is under the jurisdiction of Prosecutor Silvina Borrone, head of UFI N° 4 of Berazategui, who continues the investigation while operational forces proceed with search tasks to locate the remaining group members.
Weather conditions at the time of disappearance were favorable, so the storm hypothesis was ruled out. The main theory suggests the vessel may have been dragged by currents into unplanned areas.
The Río de la Plata (Silver River) is one of the widest rivers in the world, with an approximate surface area of 35,000 km² (about 13,500 sq mi). Its mouth is 219 km (136 miles) wide, making it a vast and complex territory for search and rescue operations. The river forms a natural border between Argentina and Uruguay, and its currents can vary significantly depending on weather conditions and tides. For context, it's wider than the English Channel at its widest point.
