Vista panorámica del Monumento Nacional a la Bandera en Rosario reinaugurado con iluminación moderna, miles de personas congregadas en el parque, banderas argentinas ondeando y el río Paraná de fondo en un día despejado de invierno
Rosario—Argentina's third-largest city, located 300 km northwest of Buenos Aires—became the nation's focal point on June 20, 2026 as the country commemorated the 206th anniversary of Manuel Belgrano's death. The celebration combined a high-profile political ceremony with a massive public festival, set against a backdrop of internal government tensions.
President Javier Milei—Argentina's libertarian president elected in 2023—led the main ceremony alongside Santa Fe Governor Maximiliano Pullaro and Rosario Mayor Pablo Javkin. This marked the first official event following the scandal involving Cabinet Chief Manuel Adorni, who attended despite facing a censure motion with 120 of the required 129 signatures in the Senate.
Vice President Victoria Villarruel confirmed her attendance despite not being on the official guest list. Sources linked to the organization indicated she was considered "persona non grata" by the presidential protocol team, creating an awkward scenario in the official grandstand.
Villarruel—who had recently criticized Adorni stating "there is no one more at odds with Belgrano's values than him"—attended by invitation from Governor Pullaro, while the national government refused to allocate her a seat among the 400 reserved for authorities.
The ceremony took place at the National Flag Monument—a 70-meter tall structure and one of Argentina's most iconic landmarks—which was officially reopened on June 17, 2026 after an investment exceeding $4 billion Argentine pesos (approximately USD 4 million). The restoration work was taken over by the provincial government after national authorities halted funding.
The monument's new observation deck was specially enabled for this occasion, offering panoramic views of the city and the Paraná River—one of South America's longest waterways. Replicas of Belgrano and San Martín's pistols were also unveiled as part of the renovated historical collection.
Officers deployed:

Santa Fe police officers
Security perimeters:

AM on Saturday 20
Public Security Secretary Omar Pereira detailed that the deployment included motorcycles, drones, and riot police. Labor unions and social organizations called for a protest march from Pringles Square, which intersected with police checkpoints en route to the Monument.
The day began at 10:00 AM with the flag-raising ceremony, national anthems, and speeches from authorities. Milei administered the loyalty oath to a group of military cadets, as he did in 2024. Approximately 3,000 fourth-grade students participated in the traditional Loyalty Pledge—a rite of passage for Argentine schoolchildren.
From noon onwards, the popular festival began with two simultaneous stages:
Singer Abel Pintos—one of Argentina's most popular folk-pop artists with over 2 million monthly listeners—arrived Friday in Rosario and planted tree number one million from the "For a Greener Latin America" campaign at the Alta en el Cielo Forest, located within the National Flag Park. The artist, ambassador for John Deere's initiative, emphasized the family-friendly nature of the event: "There will be so many activities, and that's what I love most. My concert will be the finale, but from early morning there will be plenty happening for the whole family to enjoy."
Javier Milei: Reclaimed Belgrano as "Argentina's first liberal economic intellectual" and made a gesture toward his supporters' section.
Maximiliano Pullaro: "We Santafesinos are rebellious" and demanded greater national investment in productive infrastructure.
Pablo Javkin: Highlighted security improvements in Rosario: "Fear has switched sides."
ATE (State Workers' Union) declared Milei "persona non grata" in Rosario.
June 20 commemorates the death of Manuel Belgrano in 1820, at age 50, in Buenos Aires. Belgrano created the Argentine flag on February 27, 1812 in Rosario—without authorization from the governing Triumvirate—and raised it for the first time on the banks of the Paraná River.
The National Flag Monument was inaugurated on June 20, 1957 and has become Rosario's most important symbol. Law 12.361 of 1938 established this date as an immovable national holiday.
Abel Pintos released the album "Alta en el Cielo" (High in the Sky) in 2023, featuring eight patriotic songs available free at himnosargentinos.ar, with royalties donated to three Argentine public hospitals.
