Montón de paquetes de compras online sobre una mesa, concepto de importación puerta a puerta.
The phenomenon of international online shopping shows no signs of slowing down. According to official data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) analyzed by the consultancy Analytica, courier imports accumulated USD 518 million in the first five months of 2026. This marks a historic record and an interannual growth of 113.2%, a clear indicator of the country's changing consumption patterns.
The month of May recorded imports of USD 115 million through this channel, representing an increase of 84.4% compared to the same month of the previous year. This figure stands as the highest value ever recorded for a May in constant dollars, falling just short of the absolute record of USD 118 million reached in April 2026.

For foreign readers, it is important to understand that the "door-to-door" or courier system is a simplified import mechanism. Historically, importing goods into Argentina was a complex bureaucratic process involving multiple customs declarations. This system allows consumers to purchase products from abroad without navigating traditional customs hurdles.
Private logistics companies handle transport and tax procedures, delivering the product directly to the buyer's home after a single payment. Recent regulatory changes expanded the purchase limit to USD 3,000 per shipment and established a USD 400 tax-free allowance (franchise) where goods only pay Value Added Tax (VAT), significantly reducing costs and delivery times.
Analytica's report highlights a combination of factors explaining this exponential growth:
The weight of courier imports, while small in the total aggregate, consolidates as one of the three most relevant categories in Mercosur nomenclature, reaching levels comparable to imports of small displacement vehicles.
| Period | Courier Imports | Variation |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 (Total Annual) | USD 239 million | - |
| 2025 (Total Annual) | USD 894 million | +274% |
| 2026 (Jan-May) | USD 518 million | +113.2% |
According to the Electronic Commerce Chamber, the most purchased items are:
Cell phones, notebooks, and electronic accessories lead preferences.
International brands at competitive prices.
Cosmetics, supplements, and home goods.
The rise of this channel generates concern in sectors like clothing and small electronics, which face price and variety competition that is difficult to match. This debate is not exclusive to Argentina; countries like France have already advanced with stricter regulations regarding labeling, traceability, and tax compliance for these platforms.
