The government of Bolivia, led by President Rodrigo Paz, rejected the entry of a delegation of 17 Argentine citizens traveling to the Andean nation as part of a self-proclaimed International Human Rights Humanitarian Mission. The incident occurred on June 15, 2026 at El Alto International Airport in La Paz, one of the highest airports in the world at over 4,000 meters above sea level.
Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno released an official statement explaining that Bolivian authorities detected inconsistencies between the declared conditions for entry and the activities publicly announced by the delegation. Based on this, and exercising sovereign powers, they decided not to admit entry, stated the official.
The Argentine Foreign Ministry's statement detailed that Bolivia invoked Article 26 of Migration Law N° 370 to justify the decision. Migration authorities alleged that the delegation failed to present itinerary and accommodation details, a requirement under Bolivian legislation.
The delegation's version, published by La Izquierda Diario, indicates that in all forms submitted they declared their visit purpose as a humanitarian mission, and that the excuse of improper profiling as tourists was an absolute fallacy.
From the Bolivian side, Senator Tomasa Yarhui called for the expulsion of the Argentine activists, stating they did not respect the country's sovereignty. The legislator affirmed that the Bolivian Foreign Ministry should address any foreign interference in internal affairs.
Meanwhile, Bolivian Deputy Alejandro Reyes from Unidad party stated that the group's arrival evidenced an international coordination to favor the return of authoritarian regimes and requested an investigation into who financed the visitors' tickets and expenses.
According to La Izquierda Diario, the humanitarian mission aimed to conduct a survey of human rights violation complaints arising during protests in recent weeks in Bolivia. The source reports at least seven people killed, multiple complaints regarding prison conditions, torture, and persecution of those exercising their right to protest.

President Rodrigo Paz took office following the controversial 2025 elections that sparked widespread demonstrations across the country.
Buenos Aires legislator Alejandra Barry recorded a video from La Paz airport in which she recounted: They held our documents and for now they won't let us enter without any explanation. They wanted to take us to an inadmissible persons room, we said no.
Barry emphasized that the mission's objective was to survey, produce a report, and reach out to all victims and those whose rights are being violated for exercising their legitimate right to protest.
Deputy Germán Martínez (UxP) provided additional information: according to him, Marino had already entered the country and completed migration procedures in Santa Cruz before being detained at La Paz airport.
The Argentine Embassy in Bolivia, together with the Consulates General in La Paz and Santa Cruz de la Sierra, have activated consular assistance mechanisms and maintain permanent contact with competent authorities. Delegation members are currently returning to the Argentine Republic.
