Super-Earth with Atmosphere Discovered Just 49 Light-Years Away

A New Milestone in the Search for Life: LHS 1140 b

Humanity has taken a giant leap in the exploration of the cosmos, turning our dreams of interstellar life into a closer reality.

The scientific community is celebrating an exciting breakthrough: it has been confirmed that a planet located just 49 light-years away possesses an atmosphere. This exoplanet, named LHS 1140 b, orbits in the habitable zone of a small red dwarf star, placing it at the center of attention for astronomers worldwide.

What is a Super-Earth?

LHS 1140 b belongs to a category of planets known as a Super-Earth. This means it is a rocky world, but notably larger and more massive than our own home. To be more precise, its radius is approximately 1.7 times that of Earth, and its mass is nearly 5.6 times greater. Data collected so far indicates a rocky composition, possibly accompanied by a significant amount of water, making it a fascinating candidate for harboring favorable conditions.

Solving the Mystery of its Atmosphere

Detecting the atmosphere of a planet so far away is a monumental challenge. Researchers achieved this feat by observing the planet as it passed in front of its star. A portion of the starlight passes through the atmospheric gases, and each chemical element absorbs certain wavelengths of light, leaving a measurable fingerprint in the light spectrum.

Although a subsequent observation campaign did not find the exact same signal, experts estimate that this difference could be due to variable atmospheric leakage, considering that the initial observations constitute a solid detection. This helium would form the upper part of a much denser gaseous envelope.

A Horizon Full of Hope

LHS 1140 is a red dwarf, a type of star that can produce intense ultraviolet radiation capable of stripping gases from nearby planets. The fact that LHS 1140 b has retained its atmosphere for billions of years is extraordinary and highly encouraging news.

While this discovery does not formally prove the presence of liquid water, the clues are increasingly aligning. The composition of the lower atmospheric layers remains a mystery, but they could contain nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, or water vapor. Future observations will be tasked with clarifying these details, making this planet the number one target to study the conditions necessary for liquid water outside our solar system. The universe is full of wonders waiting to be discovered!
