Argentine State Workers Union Calls National Strike for August 3: Social Dialogue Under Strain

A New Chapter in Social Dialogue

After the winter break, the Asociación Trabajadores del Estado (ATE) – Argentina’s largest public sector union – has called for a national strike and mobilization to the Ministry of Economy on August 3, 2026. The action aims to push for an emergency salary recovery and to open debate on the structure and financing of the state, as classes resume in Buenos Aires and other districts.

The Economic Reality for Workers

ATE’s national secretary general, Rodolfo Aguiar, stated that state salaries have lost 45% of their purchasing power since President Javier Milei took office. During the first half of 2026, salary increases in the National Public Administration reached only 12.9%, while inflation for the same period stood at 16.9%.

Aguiar also highlighted that utility rates have skyrocketed by 919% since the current administration began, further squeezing household budgets and driving up debt among both formal and informal workers.

August: A Month of Mobilizations

The August 3 strike is not an isolated event. ATE is considering joining forces with the Confederation of Education Workers (CTERA) and will serve as a prelude to a new National Day of Struggle scheduled for August 7, the feast of San Cayetano, patron saint of work.

On that day, ATE will march together with the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the two Central de Trabajadores de la Argentina (CTA) unions, and the Unión de Trabajadores de la Economía Popular (UTEP) under the historic slogans “Peace, Bread, Land, Roof, and Work”, seeking to build bridges toward the common good and make visible the situation of Argentine families.
