Red Alert in Córdoba: High Winds, Zonda Effect, and Extreme Fire Risk

Red Alert: Extreme Forest Fire Risk

According to provincial authorities, the combination of strong wind gusts, low humidity, and temperatures exceeding 26 degrees Celsius (79°F) creates a critical scenario for Thursday, July 16, and Friday, July 17, 2026. The local firefighter system and the Provincial Coordination Agency are on maximum alert to protect the natural environment and the population.

The Zonda Wind Phenomenon

The Hydro-Meteorological Observatory of the Province of Córdoba anticipates strong to very strong wind gusts mainly from the northwest and west. In the western region of the province, the wind intensity could generate a marked Zonda effect, directly affecting the capital city and its metropolitan area, where reduced visibility due to suspended dust is expected.

What is the Zonda effect?
It is a downslope wind descending from the Andes mountain range. As the air mass loses its moisture on the western slopes and descends rapidly, it warms up significantly due to compression. This generates an extremely dry environment and a temporary spike in temperature, which drastically elevates the risk of wildfires.

Driving Recommendations

  • Drive with maximum caution.
  • Maintain a moderate speed.
  • Increase braking distance from other vehicles.

Home Safety Tips

  • Remove potted plants or hanging objects from balconies and terraces that could fall onto the street.
  • Secure roof sheets, signs, and any loose items that could be blown away.

Emergency Phone Numbers

Civil Defense (Line 103): For affected homes, blown-off roofs, or fallen trees and poles.

Municipal Medical Emergencies (Line 107): To request ambulances for weather-related accidents.

By following these simple precautions, we can navigate these days safely and protect our families and surroundings. Sources: La Voz and Cba24n.
