The historic victory of the Argentine National Team by 2-1 against England in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup unleashed indescribable euphoria across the country. In Mar del Plata, Argentina's premier Atlantic beach resort, the traditional corner of Avenida Luro and Mitre—home to the monument of General José de San Martín, the liberator of South America—became the epicenter of a massive celebration.
However, the immense joy of advancing to the final was tinged with moments of tension and stark reminders about safety during celebrations. Around 18:30 hs, a young man under 20 years old suffered a high fall from the San Martín monument itself. Emergency Medical Service (SAME) personnel quickly assisted the young man, who was transported to the Hospital Interzonal General de Agudos (Higa) while conscious.
The collective euphoria also left other scenes of excess. Near 20:00 hs, a traffic light located at the intersection of Luro and Hipólito Yrigoyen ended up on the ground. According to local media reports, a second person suffered a fall from that traffic light, bringing the total to two people hospitalized during the day of celebrations.
To contain the massive crowd of fans who gathered to celebrate, a significant security operation was deployed in the city center. Personnel from the Municipal Patrol, Civil Defense, the Red Cross, and the Buenos Aires Provincial Police worked together. They had to manage the overflowing emotion of the supporters who chanted "el que no salta es un inglés" (he who doesn't jump is an Englishman), a classic Argentine football chant mocking their rivals.
The triumph against England marks Argentina's sixth consecutive win in the tournament and their qualification for the grand final of the 2026 World Cup. The team, led by coach Lionel Scaloni, will face Spain next Sunday in New Jersey. The goals by Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez, following a cross from Lionel Messi, are etched in the memory of all Argentines who now dream of winning another world championship.
