The life of Dr. René Favaloro, the legendary Argentine cardiovascular surgeon who created the coronary bypass technique, will inspire audiences once again. This time, it will be through the voice and personal story of María Becerra, currently one of Argentina's biggest pop music stars and affectionately known as 'La Nena de Argentina' (The Girl of Argentina).
The production, titled 'René Favaloro, the Last Hero' (original Spanish: 'René Favaloro, el último prócer'), is a joint creation by the media outlet Resumido and the Favaloro Foundation. It will be available soon on the YouTube platform.
What makes this documentary even more moving is the participation of the singer's father, Pedro Becerra, who is also a surgeon. Together, father and daughter will narrate the special bond that connects their family with the legacy of the doctor who revolutionized cardiovascular surgery worldwide.
A shot to the heart. I swear it seems crazy, doesn't it? A man who saved the hearts of millions of people ended up turning off his own life.
René Gerónimo Favaloro (1923-2000) was an Argentine physician of global renown. His greatest contribution to science was the technique of the coronary artery bypass surgery, a life-saving intervention performed millions of times every year around the world. Despite achieving immense success in the United States, he made the noble decision to return to Argentina to found his own medical institution and help his home country. María Becerra highlights this in the trailer: 'He could have stayed in the United States. He could have had a much more comfortable and luxurious life. But he came back.'
Tragically, Favaloro took his own life in 2000 after facing severe financial struggles to keep his foundation afloat, a heartbreaking end for a man who dedicated his life to saving others. The quote from María Becerra refers to this sad chapter, reminding us of the human vulnerability behind the medical legend.
The documentary will not only feature the perspective of the Becerra family but will also gather key figures who knew and lived alongside the doctor's legacy. Among the participants are:
As the trailer for this exciting production beautifully states: 'We don't want to tell you how a doctor changed the history of cardiovascular surgery, but who was the man behind the white coat.' An invitation to reflect on the humanity and commitment of one of the most deeply loved figures in recent Argentine history.
