Mendoza Revitalizes Its Heart: Historic Works Begin on Yrigoyen Street with 18 Months of Transformation

25/06/2026 15:51 - Actualidad

A Key Artery Undergoes Transformation

Hipólito Yrigoyen Street, which marks the boundary between the Capital and Godoy Cruz departments (similar to boroughs in other major cities), will begin an unprecedented comprehensive renovation starting Monday, June 29. The project will renew water and sewage networks over 40 years old, while also constructing new roadways, sidewalks, and complementary infrastructure to modernize one of the most traveled routes in Greater Mendoza.

What Makes This Project Special?

The funding comes from the Government of Mendoza, while AYSAM (Aguas y Saneamientos Mendocinos - Mendoza's Water and Sanitation Utility) will provide 100% of the supplies to optimize water and sanitation connections. The complete project will require 18 months of work and will be executed in 7 stages to minimize impact on traffic flow and local commercial activity.

About Mendoza and AYSAM

Mendoza is Argentina's fourth-largest province and a world-renowned wine-producing region located at the foothills of the Andes. AYSAM is the provincial utility responsible for managing drinking water supply and wastewater treatment throughout the province, ensuring safe water access and environmental protection for over 1.7 million residents.

First Stage: Location and Duration

Work will proceed from East to West, with the first stage focusing on:

Location From To Linear Meters
Brasil Street Belgrano San Martín 235 meters
Yrigoyen Street San Martín Roque Sáenz Peña

The estimated timeline for this first stage is 5 months.

Mandatory Traffic Closures

During the first stage, the following will be completely closed:

  • Yrigoyen and San Martín intersection
  • Brasil Street between San Juan and San Martín

San Martín Avenue is Mendoza's main commercial thoroughfare, similar to Fifth Avenue in New York or Oxford Street in London.

Detours for Southbound Traffic
  1. Continue on San Martín Avenue to Serú Street
  2. Turn West
  3. Merge onto República del Líbano Avenue
  4. Continue toward Godoy Cruz
Entering the City from the South

Option 1:

  1. Turn left on 25 de Mayo Street
  2. Take Almirante Brown and España northbound

Option 2:

  1. Turn right on Castellani
  2. Turn left on Belgrano
  3. Continue northbound on San Juan

Public Transportation: Alternative Routes

Alternative Route 1

From: San Martín and Morón

  1. Continue east on Morón to Rioja
  2. Via Brasil, Ricardo Videla, and Minuzzi (Godoy Cruz)
  3. Return to San Martín Avenue
Alternative Route 2

From: Peltier Roundabout and La Pampa

  1. Head south on La Pampa to Capitán de Fragata Moyano
  2. Continue east to República del Líbano
  3. Then south via República del Líbano and Echeverría

The 7 Stages of the Complete Project

To minimize disruption to residents and maintain traffic alternatives, work is organized into seven stages:

Stage Location Type of Work
1 Brasil (Belgrano-San Martín) / Yrigoyen (San Martín-Roque Sáenz Peña) Networks, roadways, and sidewalks
2 Yrigoyen (Roque Sáenz Peña-España)
3 Yrigoyen (España-La Pampa)
4 Yrigoyen (La Pampa-Iberlucea)
5 Yrigoyen (Iberlucea-Beltrán)
6 Iberlucea (Yrigoyen-25 de Mayo) Collector construction
7 25 de Mayo (Iberlucea-Pedro Pascual Segura)
Stages 6 and 7: Underground Collector

These stages will run in parallel with stages 4 and 5. They include constructing a new collector passing through a tunnel beneath the metrotranvía network (Mendoza's light rail system) to connect with Pedro Pascual Segura. Only partial roadway will be affected, without demolishing sidewalks.

Work Details Included

Stages 1 to 5
  • Demolition of existing roadway
  • Soil movement
  • Installation of infrastructure pipes
  • Leveling, compaction, and concrete paving
  • Demolition of sidewalks, vehicle and pedestrian bridges
  • New residential connections
  • Construction of sidewalks, gutters, and corners with pedestrian ramps
  • Tree planting niches
  • Paving stones and tactile paving for accessibility
Stages 6 and 7
  • Partial demolition of existing roadway
  • Soil movement
  • Installation of infrastructure pipes
  • Tunnel beneath the light rail network
  • Leveling, compaction, and concrete paving

An Interjurisdictional Cooperation Project

The work will be executed under a scheme of mutual cooperation between AYSAM and the municipalities of Capital and Godoy Cruz. Both municipalities will organize traffic and public transportation during the works. The central objective is to consolidate a more efficient public services network, with technical capacity to meet demands for the coming decades. The Yrigoyen Street renovation will serve as a revitalization engine for this commercial and urban hub of Greater Mendoza, benefiting residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
