An episode of extreme violence shocked the community of Pilar, a city located in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, when a passenger brutally attacked a bus driver. The incident occurred on Thursday, June 11, 2026, around 5:00 PM, at the intersection of Paraguay and Baradero streets, in the Agustoni neighborhood.
The victim, Luis Romero, 42 years old, was driving unit 85 of the Ruta Bus company on line 511 when a passenger began verbally confronting him. The driver had not stopped the bus because he had not heard the stop request bell.
Pilar is a city in Buenos Aires Province, located about 50 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires City. The Agustoni neighborhood is a residential area within Pilar. In Argentina, urban buses are called "colectivos" and are the primary mode of public transportation for millions of citizens. Drivers often work alone in their cabins without protection, making them vulnerable to passenger aggression.
According to Romero's account to the local media outlet Pilar de Todos, everything began when a passenger headed to the rear of the bus intending to get off. The driver stated that he did not hear the stop bell, so he continued driving.
"He told me he did press the bell, that I should wash my ears. I replied that I hear perfectly well, that I didn't need any washing, and that he shouldn't make trouble where there wasn't any. I opened the door and he got off."
However, when Romero attempted to resume his route, he observed that the attacker re-entered through the rear door and walked forcefully toward the driver's cabin to violently strike him in the head and face.
Brass knuckles (called "manopla" in Argentina) are a weapon worn on the hand to increase the force of punches. Typically made of metal or resistant materials, they can cause severe injuries because they concentrate impact on a smaller surface. Their use in an assault can constitute an aggravating factor in criminal proceedings.
Romero, with 19 years of experience as a bus driver, expressed his shock at what happened:
"There was no need to do this to me. I've been a bus driver for 19 years and this is the first time something like this has happened to me. This person must pay for what he did to me."
The worker also noted that the incident caused deep concern in his family due to the severity of the injuries.
A woman who was attempting to disembark from the bus assisted Romero and called 911 and emergency services (SAME). The driver was transported to Hospital Central de Pilar, where a CT scan confirmed the triple cheekbone fracture.
The police report was filed at the Agustoni Police Station. Romero was accompanied by union delegates and representatives from Ruta Bus company, who provided the security camera recordings from the bus to help identify the attacker.
This type of incident reflects a worrying situation regarding the safety of transportation workers. Bus drivers in Argentina face daily stressful situations, conflicts with passengers, and in some cases, physical assaults. Security cameras have been crucial in documenting these incidents and advancing judicial investigations. Many unions are calling for better protection measures for drivers, including protective barriers in driver cabins.
