A devastating aviation accident shook the community of Butler, Missouri, in the United States Midwest, this Sunday. A single-engine turboprop aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff, claiming the lives of all 12 people on board: 11 skydivers and the pilot.
The crash occurred around 11:20 a.m. local time near Butler Memorial Airport, located approximately 65 miles (105 kilometers) south of Kansas City, local authorities confirmed.
According to Dennis Jacobs, the airport's interim administrator:
The aircraft was engulfed in flames following the impact.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) - the U.S. federal agency responsible for investigating civil aviation accidents - will lead the investigation into the cause of the crash. The victims have not yet been identified as authorities work to notify their families.
Sergeant Justin Ewing of the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that emergency teams received a call alerting them that an aircraft had gone down and was engulfed in flames. Officers from the Butler Police Department and the Bates County Sheriff's Office are also on scene.
This accident occurs during a period of heightened activity due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the United States is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico. Kansas City is one of the host cities, and Butler is located approximately one hour by car from the stadium where Group J matches are being played.
