Eleven skydivers and one pilot lost their lives on Sunday when an aircraft crashed near Butler Memorial Airport in the state of Missouri, authorities reported.
The accident occurred at approximately 11:20 a.m. local time, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol Sergeant Justin Ewing, who released a statement on the social media platform X.

Dennis Jacobs, the interim airport administrator and emergency management director for Bates County, explained the sequence of events to CNN:
The aircraft was transporting people for recreational skydiving activities when emergency services received the distress call.
The victims have not yet been officially identified because their families have not been notified, Sergeant Ewing reported.
The airport administrator described the incident as "horrible".
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) — the U.S. federal agency responsible for investigating civil transportation accidents — will lead the investigation into the cause of the crash.

Butler is a small city located approximately 65 miles (105 kilometers) south of Kansas City, in Bates County, Missouri, in the central United States. Kansas City is a major metropolitan area straddling the states of Missouri and Kansas.
Officers from the Butler Police Department and the Bates County Sheriff's Office are currently at the crash site.
