The conflict in the Middle East is reaching a critical juncture on this Sunday, June 14, 2026. While the United States and Iran negotiate a peace deal that could be signed within hours, Israel has intensified its attacks against Hezbollah, bombing Beirut and hitting over 70 targets in southern Lebanon. This military action raises serious concerns about the viability of the diplomatic understanding.
The Israeli military struck targets belonging to the Shiite group Hezbollah in the Dahiyeh district, a suburb south of Beirut considered a stronghold of the pro-Iranian movement. For international readers, Dahiyeh is a densely populated area known as the operational heart of Hezbollah in Lebanon.
According to the Lebanese Civil Defense, the bodies of three deceased people were recovered from the rubble, while six wounded were transferred to hospitals following the bombing in the Ghobeiry area, Mount Lebanon province. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that in the last 24 hours, they attacked more than 70 terrorist infrastructures of Hezbollah, including launchers and structures used by the group. The Army also confirmed the death of Hezbollah militants in positions where Israeli troops operate in the southern Lebanese sector.
Israel ordered the evacuation of a dozen localities in the Nabatieh region in response to projectile launches by Hezbollah that reached Israeli territory.
Iran's chief negotiator, Mohamad Baqer Qalibaf, warned this Sunday that "it is impossible to talk about moving forward" with the United States if it lacks "the will or capacity to fulfill its commitments." He referred to the "good cop, bad cop" game as outdated in a message on social media platform X.
A delegation from Qatar arrived in Tehran on Sunday as part of conversations to end the war. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai stated yesterday that "there is a high probability that the memorandum of understanding will be finalized in the coming days."
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose government mediates between Iran and the US, affirmed Saturday that a peace agreement "will likely be finalized in the next 24 hours."
Ultra-nationalist ministers Itamar Ben Gvir (National Security) and Bezalel Smotrich (Finance) urged new attacks against Lebanon. Ben Gvir stated on X, "For every drone - a missile. For every violation - fire." Smotrich urged to "destroy buildings in Dahiyeh" and force the displacement of the Lebanese population.
The IDF reported identifying two impacts from suspected aerial targets near the Israel-Lebanon border, with no injuries reported.
The conflict between Israel and Iran intensified starting February 28, 2026, leaving more than 3,700 dead in Lebanon. The peace agreement mediated by Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey seeks to stop a regional war that could destabilize global oil supply through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route. Brent crude oil is trading at USD 88.27/barrel after a 2.3% drop due to peace expectations.
Foreign ministers of the European Union will meet on Monday in Luxembourg to discuss banning imports from illegal Israeli settlements. Sanctions against extremist ministers Ben Gvir and Smotrich are also on the table, though Germany and others do not back this measure.
In a separate development, the President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi, began his first official visit to Israel, received by President Isaac Herzog. Israel recognized Somaliland as an independent state on December 26 last year.
