Milei Stirs Diplomatic Tensions with Spain, Shares Harsh Article Against Pedro Sánchez

29/07/2026 18:30 - Politica

A New International Clash

July 29, 2026

Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, continues his unconventional foreign policy and has sparked another diplomatic row, this time with Spain. On his X account, the libertarian leader shared an article from the Italian magazine Panorama titled Spain-Argentina: No Coincidence, which harshly criticizes the management of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Milei accompanied the post with his trademark phrase: Fenómeno barrial (neighborhood phenomenon).

What Did the Shared Article Say?

The text contrasts Argentina’s economic model with Spain’s, asking whether Milei’s “chainsaw” approach is better than the Spanish socialist model, which the article claims is fueled by corruption. It further argues that Sánchez’s “hyper-statist” Spain prevailed and mentions that the PSOE leader tried to use Spain’s victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup to polish an image tarnished by ongoing investigations and legal proceedings involving his family circle.

Diplomatic Context

  • 🇧🇷 Conflict with Brazil: On July 25, Milei insulted Lula da Silva in São Paulo, calling him “trash” and a “convict.”
  • 🇪🇸 Tension with Spain: This adds to previous friction over Milei’s interference in Spanish domestic politics.
  • 💰 Bilateral trade (with Brazil): Reached $31.195 billion in 2025.

Parallel Clash with Brazil and the Foreign Minister’s Role

This new attack on a foreign leader comes just days after Milei ignited a diplomatic crisis with Brazil. During a rally in São Paulo supporting Flávio Bolsonaro’s candidacy on July 25, 2026, the Argentine president insulted his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, calling him “trash” and a “convict,” and also lashed out at Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

In response, Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno moved to de-escalate the conflict with Brazil, stating there is “no chance” of breaking relations and that it is simply a matter of political and ideological differences. Quirno confirmed that Ambassador to Brazil Julio Bitelli will return to Argentina, but that they will not respond to statements from the Brazilian government.

There is no chance that we will break relations. We are not taking this to the institutional level.

A Confrontational Foreign Policy

The attack on Sánchez consolidates Milei’s strategy of openly confronting progressive or left-leaning governments both regionally and globally. The president’s interventions in political events organized by opposition groups abroad—such as the launch of Bolsonaro’s campaign in Brazil or previous appearances linked to Spain’s Vox party—serve as direct precedents for these diplomatic tensions, marking a unique style in Argentine foreign policy.
