Investigation Intensifies
The Greenville Police Department and the county coroner's office are probing the sudden death of Hayden Panettiere, found unresponsive on Sunday, August 16 at her apartment in the Judson Mill Lofts area. Now, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) – the US federal agency responsible for fighting drug trafficking – has joined the case, according to reports from ABC and TMZ.
An initial autopsy by the coroner found no signs of violence, but toxicology tests are pending to establish the official cause. In the 911 call, dispatchers heard references to an 'overdose' and 'cardiac arrest.' Paramedics attempted CPR, but she was pronounced dead at 2:32 PM, just over 40 minutes after the emergency call.
The Mysterious Message from Ruby Rose
Actress Ruby Rose, 40, posted a long, cryptic note on social media urging caution about jumping to conclusions. Addressed to Panettiere's mother, she wrote: 'I have so many things to say about our dear Hayden. If the roles were reversed, she would have already sorted this out. Our brave, bold H. faced everything head-on. She was fearless.' She also added: 'Don't trust her mother, from whom she was estranged, or any of her abusers. She worked too hard and came too far to end up like this.' Ruby asked for patience for Panettiere's daughter, Kaya, aged 11.
Health Struggles and Past Injury
In March 2026, Panettiere was photographed at LAX airport using crutches and struggling to walk, with her ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson. She explained she had lumbar nerve pain. The back injury dates back to 2005 when a zebra knocked her down on a South African film set, causing head and neck trauma. In her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning (released in May 2026), she admitted that opioid use increased when the neck injury flared up. Friends say she suffered intense pain in the past year.
Mother Speaks and Domestic Violence History
Her mother, Lesley Vogel, broke her silence with a phone interview to NBC, admitting they had grown apart: 'It becomes very hard to be true to yourself, and Hayden sadly lost her way.' She also recalled her son Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023: 'I feel she's with her brother and they are at peace.'
Hickerson, who was present at the apartment with his brother, is a convicted domestic abuser: in 2021 he was sentenced to 45 days for punching the actress. A neighbor, Mia Terrazas, claimed she had called emergency services multiple times over domestic violence incidents and had seen Panettiere removed on a stretcher. She called Hickerson a 'predator.'
Greenville police have not indicated any criminal action, but the DEA's involvement points to a possible overdose. Panettiere was open about her past struggles, and leaves behind her daughter Kaya, whose father is Ukrainian boxing legend Wladimir Klitschko.
The actress is best remembered as Claire Bennet in the series Heroes and Juliette Barnes in Nashville, which earned her two Golden Globe nominations. Her career started in childhood, with roles in Snow Days and Remember the Titans.
