Another Night to Forget in Avellaneda
Racing Club is in freefall. On Friday, August 14, 2026, the 'Academia' lost 1-0 to Banfield at the Cilindro (their home stadium in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires) in Matchday 5 of the Torneo Clausura – the second half of Argentina's top-flight season. This was their third consecutive loss, following defeats to Tigre and Argentinos Juniors. The winning goal came from Alexander Machado, a 19-year-old debutant, who scored in the 24th minute of the first half.
Despite dominating possession and firing 23 shots, Racing managed only 2 on target. The clearest chances fell to Elías Torres, who replaced the injured Lautaro Díaz but missed two sitters from close range. Tomás Conechny also struggled, making poor decisions and offering little creativity.
'This is a difficult moment. We have to be prepared because football has these moments. I am very self-critical with myself and with the team. The feeling is that we started well but weren't deep and didn't create chances, and in the second half the team was much more vertical, but we need to score goals.'
Fan Anger and the Shadow of the Barra Brava
The atmosphere at the Cilindro was tense. Near the end of the match, supporters chanted 'la comisión, la comisión, se va a la puta que lo parió' (a vulgar insult aimed at the club's board) and also directed insults at president Diego Milito, who had admitted on Tuesday that being insulted didn't leave him indifferent.
The situation has been escalating for days. On Thursday afternoon, members of the 'Los Pibes de Racing' barra brava (organized fan group) stormed the training ground and demanded that the club 'take care of the young players.' Leandro Paredes, a leader of that faction, spoke for nearly 10 minutes with Marcos Rojo, Facundo Cambeses, and Gastón Martirena.
Youth and Injuries: A Cocktail Complicating Vojvoda's Plans
With a 'low-cost' transfer market and several key absences, Vojvoda has turned to youth. Mateo Martínez (18) made his first start in central defense, Alejandro Tello (18) also featured, and Alberto Campo (19), the Ecuadorian winger, came on in the second half and was one of the few bright spots.
Injuries are another headache: Lautaro Díaz was forced off in the first half, joining a long list of absentees. Adrián 'Maravilla' Martínez will serve a three-match suspension for an elbow incident against Argentinos, meaning he'll miss the upcoming clásico against Boca Juniors. Additionally, Marco Di Césare is sidelined with a fracture, and Nazareno Colombo could be transferred to Talleres.
Vojvoda acknowledged that 'we lack players' and that the club is seeking reinforcements, especially in central defense: Adonis Frías (Santos) and Mateo Carabajal (Independiente del Valle) are being linked as potential signings.
What's Next: Copa Argentina as a Lifeline
With no room for error, Racing will face Belgrano de Córdoba on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at 19:15 at the Estadio Único La Pedrera in San Luis, in the round of 16 of the Copa Argentina. After that, they host Boca Juniors in Avellaneda.
'I show myself with pain and optimism for the team. If we do things well, results will come. We need to correct several things to turn good performances into results,' Vojvoda concluded.
