My mother would have followed official advice if it had been given in time, Danielle stated, noting that her parents spoke Spanish and followed the correct routes.
France has already broken its historical record for burned surface area, while Spain has registered an unprecedented number of fires for this time of year, approaching the devastating levels of the 2022 season.

Scientists point out that the extreme severity is due to a whiplash climate—wet followed by dry—intensified by the global climate crisis. A very wet winter and spring in Western Europe fostered abundant vegetation growth. However, heatwaves beginning in May dried the land, turning the vegetation into tinder. The late June heatwave was the most severe ever recorded on the continent.
Furthermore, massive fire clouds, known scientifically as pyrocumulonimbus (thunderclouds generated by intense heat from wildfires that can produce lightning and spark new fires), have formed in France. French President Emmanuel Macron described the situation as the most difficult since World War II.
