The Trick to Never Run Out of Internet: How to Adjust Your Phone's Data Cycle

30/07/2026 18:43 - Tecnologia

Why Your Phone's Data Counter Is Often Wrong

Most of us check how many gigabytes we have left using our carrier's app (in Argentina, that's Claro, Personal, or Movistar). However, your phone has its own data counter, which by default is usually set incorrectly.

The problem is almost systematic: phones reset that counter on the 1st of each month. But billing cycles don't always start that day. If your plan renews on the 12th or the 20th, the numbers will never match. This can lead you to think you have data when you don't, or to unnecessarily restrict your usage.

The Adjustment on Android

On Android devices, the path is quick:

  • 1. Go to SettingsNetwork & InternetData usageBilling cycle.
  • 2. Enter the exact day of the month your plan starts.
  • 3. Turn on a warning before you reach your limit.

*Menu names may vary by manufacturer (on Samsung it's Connections → Data usage; on Motorola, Network & Internet).

The Method on iPhone (iOS)

Apple's system does not allow automatic reset scheduling, so the method is manual:

  • 1. Go to SettingsCellular.
  • 2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Reset Statistics on the day your cycle starts.
  • 3. We recommend setting a monthly calendar reminder so you don't forget.

Identify Apps That Consume Data in the Background

Once you've synced your cycle, it's the perfect time to check which apps are using your data without you noticing. Streaming platforms, social networks, and news apps usually top that list.

To review it:

  • Android: Settings → Data usage → View app usage.
  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular and turn off apps that don't need mobile data.

If you find an app you barely use but it's consuming data, it's a sign it's running in the background without your permission. With just two minutes of checking each month, you'll have real control over your plan and avoid surprises on your bill.
