Rent Instead of Buy: Apple's Revolutionary Subscription Plan for iPhones, Macs, and More

29/07/2026 19:18 - Tecnologia

A Paradigm Shift in Tech Purchasing

On July 28, 2026, Apple took a historic step by launching Apple Upgrade, a new business model that offers an alternative to traditional buying: renting devices through a subscription system with monthly payments. For now, this innovative service is available exclusively in the United States, both in physical stores and on the Apple Store online.

How Does the New System Work?

The initiative, developed in partnership with Klarna Group Plc (whose shares rose 11% after the announcement), works like a tech lease. The user pays a fixed monthly fee and, at the end of the contract, has three options:

  • Return the device.
  • Upgrade to a newer model and start a new plan.
  • Keep the device by paying its remaining value.

Pricing and Subscription Terms

The program offers plans from 12 to 36 months, with prices varying by device. Importantly, users must pass a credit check to qualify.

DeviceMonthly fee fromAvailable terms
iPhoneUSD 17.9912 or 24 months
Apple WatchUSD 11.9912 or 24 months
iPadUSD 11.9924 or 36 months
MacUSD 24.9924 or 36 months

Exclusions and Key Details

The new payment format does not cover the entire Apple catalog. Excluded from this plan are the iPhone 16, Apple Watch SE, MacBook Neo, and the entry-level iPad. Additionally, the program does not include AppleCare coverage—a key difference from the previous iPhone Upgrade Program—and cannot be used by businesses or educational institutions.

The End of the Previous Financing Program

Apple had previously worked on its own subscription program, which was canceled in 2024. This time, choosing not to bear the financial risk alone, the company partnered with Klarna. In parallel with the launch of Apple Upgrade, Apple will stop accepting new users into its existing iPhone financing programs, aiming to fully replace them with this new subscription model.
