A Devastating Crash Shakes Mendoza
On Sunday, August 16, 2026, at approximately 8:30 PM, a head-on collision on Provincial Route 60, near Callejón Piperbo in Fray Luis Beltrán (Maipú, Mendoza, Argentina), resulted in three fatalities and multiple serious injuries. The crash involved a Peugeot 504 and a Volkswagen T-Cross, and the impact was so severe that it left the vehicles unrecognizable.
According to preliminary reports, the T-Cross, which was traveling westward, allegedly attempted an overtaking maneuver and collided directly with the oncoming Peugeot. The Victims
Oscar Aníbal “Chacha” Fernández Mercau, 48, was a well-known amateur football referee in the eastern zone of Maipú and surrounding areas. He had officiated a match just hours before the accident. He died on the way to Hospital Central.
Juana Masó Tillar, 21, was an Industrial Engineering student at the University of Mendoza. She passed away on Monday, August 17, at 5:44 PM due to cardiorespiratory arrest at Hospital Central.
Rosario Masó Tillar, 19, was a Psychology student at the Catholic University of Argentina (UCA) – Mendoza campus. Brain death was confirmed around 8:00 PM on Monday. The sisters lived in Chacras de Coria, a picturesque town in Luján de Cuyo, and both graduated from the prestigious Colegio San Luis Gonzaga in Mendoza.
The Injured
Three other people were in the T-Cross, all relatives of the sisters:
- Martín Omar Tillar (52), the driver, remains in serious condition at Hospital Lagomaggiore.
- Ariadna Tillar (54), suffered fractures to her tibia, fibula, and lower jaw; she is in intensive care at Hospital Perrupato.
- Florencia Bettalemmi (42), sustained a severe head injury and is hospitalized at Hospital El Carmen.
Community Grief and Tributes
The Colegio San Luis Gonzaga, where both sisters completed their secondary education, expressed deep sorrow on social media: “With profound pain, we accompany the family and friends of Juana and Rosario Masó, former students of our school. We unite in prayer and closeness to their family and the entire classes of 2023 and 2025.”
The UCA Mendoza also released a statement: “We accompany the family and friends of Rosario Masó Tillar, a Psychology student at our faculty, who has left us physically.”

Traffic police, the 61st Precinct, municipal transit officers, volunteer firefighters, and the Coordinated Emergency Service (SEC) responded to the scene. The Halcón 3 medical helicopter transported one of the injured victims to Hospital Central.
