A weekend marked by sorrow in Patagonia
The community of San Carlos de Bariloche, a picturesque city nestled in the Argentine Patagonia, is in mourning after a tragic accident on Saturday, August 8, 2026. A 3-year-old girl died after the vehicle she was traveling in with her mother plunged into the icy waters of Lake Nahuel Huapi, one of the region's most iconic natural landmarks.
The incident occurred shortly after 2:00 PM at approximately kilometer 15 of Avenida Bustillo, near the Villa Don Orione neighborhood. According to local reports, the mother was driving an SUV along an unpaved internal road. Due to ice on the road—a common hazard during Patagonian winters—the vehicle lost control, tumbled down a slope of more than 20 meters, and ended up submerged in the lake.
A race against time rescue operation
Given the severity of the situation, an emergency operation was immediately deployed. The girl's father, who was not in the vehicle, bravely dove into the freezing waters in a desperate attempt to help his family, alerting neighbors with his cries, who then notified the authorities.
Teams from the Argentine Naval Prefecture, the Ruca Cura fire station, the 55th Police Sub-station, and Civil Protection worked tirelessly in a very difficult-to-access area. Divers had to descend using harnesses. Despite the rescuers' relentless efforts, the child's body was found at a depth of approximately 25 meters, trapped inside the vehicle—apparently held by her seatbelt—shortly after 4:00 PM near Camping Cirse.
The investigation is being led by prosecutors Guillermo Lista and Álvaro Viterbori, while the Office of Victim Assistance (OFAVI) is providing support to the family during this time of profound grief.
Health status of the parents
The girl's mother, who managed to escape the vehicle, was urgently transferred to the San Carlos Sanatorium. She suffered various injuries and a case of early-stage hypothermia due to the lake's extremely cold temperatures. After receiving medical tests and psychological support, she was discharged shortly after 8:30 PM. The father also received treatment for hypothermia after entering the water.
What is hypothermia and why is it dangerous in Patagonia?
Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, causing the core body temperature to drop below 35°C (95°F). In winter, the waters of Lake Nahuel Huapi reach extremely low temperatures, which can trigger thermal shock and loss of mobility within minutes. The courage and dedication of the rescue teams, who face these harsh conditions to save lives, deserve recognition and gratitude.
