Winter Storm Impacts Education in Mendoza, Argentina

Mendoza, a world-renowned wine-producing province located at the foothills of the Andes Mountains in western Argentina, is currently experiencing a severe winter storm. Authorities reported that the General Directorate of Schools (DGE)—the provincial education authority—made the preventive decision to suspend in-person classes due to heavy snowfall, rain, and impassable roads leading to educational institutions.

Which Areas Are Affected?

According to official information issued for July 21, 2026, the measure affects schools of all levels and modalities in the following high-altitude Andean locations and regions:

  • Malargüe (a southern department known for its rugged terrain)
  • Uspallata (a high mountain valley in the Las Heras department)
  • Mountain zones of Tupungato
  • Polvaredas
  • Punta de Vacas
  • Puente del Inca (a famous natural arch in the Las Heras department)

Fortunately, the rest of the province is conducting classes with total normality, though authorities are continuously monitoring weather conditions to protect the community.

Education Without Interruptions

To ensure learning never stops, the DGE has arranged for school activities to be held virtually via the Escuela Digital Mendoza platform. This tool allows students and teachers to maintain pedagogical continuity safely from the warmth of their homes.

A Recent Precedent: Successful Rescue

The snowstorm had already caused complications days prior. On July 19, 2026, a similar storm left 23 people trapped in the high mountains. Fortunately, they were successfully rescued by emergency teams, demonstrating the high efficacy of the province's safety protocols.
