Tragic Farewell: Beloved Folk Musician Dies in Head-On Crash on Argentina's Route 22

A Tragic Saturday on Argentina's Patagonian Highway

On the afternoon of Saturday, June 27, 2026, tragedy struck the musical community of Neuquén, a province in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Around 2:20 PM, at kilometer 1637 of National Route 22—a major highway connecting the cities of Zapala and Cutral Co—a fatal accident claimed the life of a promising young regional artist.

How the Accident Unfolded

According to Comisario Roberto Fuentes, who spoke to local media, the crash involved two vehicles:

  • Iveco 440 Truck: Owned by a machinery rental company, traveling from Cutral Co toward Zapala. The driver, a 38-year-old man from Zapala, was uninjured.
  • Black Volkswagen Polo Track: Driven by Gonzalo Orellana, traveling in the opposite direction. The 26-year-old from Cutral Co died instantly from the frontal impact.

Initial investigations suggest the car may have crossed into the oncoming lane, causing the head-on collision. After impact, both vehicles moved toward the southern shoulder, where the VW Polo ended up on its right side.

Who Was Gonzalo Orellana?

Gonzalo Gonza Orellana was only 26 years old but had already become a recognized figure in the chamamé music scene of northern Patagonia.

Chamamé is a traditional folk music genre from northeastern Argentina and parts of Paraguay and Brazil, similar to polka but with indigenous Guaraní influences. It features accordion, guitar, and percussion instruments like the güira.

The güira is a percussion instrument made of a metal sheet with small ridges, played by scraping it with a metal brush—a signature sound in Latin American folk music. This was Gonzalo's instrument in Los Chamas de Cristal.

Raised in a musical family—his father was also a respected musician—Gonzalo developed his talent from childhood. He leaves behind a young daughter and a musical legacy that will endure.

Emotional Farewells

Los Chamas de Cristal, the band where Gonzalo played güira, shared a heartfelt message:

"With deep sorrow we say goodbye to Gonza Orellana. His music, his joy, and his affection will leave an indelible mark on us. We will carry you forever in our hearts and on every stage."

His brother Ezequiel wrote: "I love you and I will love you all my life, my brother. You leave a void I will never be able to fill."

The group La Fuerza, fellow chamamé musicians, added: "Music is in mourning today."

Emergency Response at the Scene

Multiple agencies coordinated efforts at the crash site:

  • Neuquén Police Traffic Division
  • Volunteer Firefighters
  • Health system personnel
  • Civil Protection teams

Traffic was initially completely halted, then alternating flow was enabled. The highway was fully cleared after 5:30 PM.

Geographic Context for Visitors

National Route 22 is one of Argentina's most important highways, stretching across northern Patagonia from the Andes mountains to the Atlantic coast. The stretch between Zapala and Cutral Co passes through the oil-rich provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro, approximately 1,100 kilometers (680 miles) southwest of Buenos Aires.

This region is known for its vast landscapes, fruit production, and growing energy industry, as well as its vibrant regional folk music traditions.
