The Mosquito Bite Mystery Solved: It Is Not About Sweet Blood

30/07/2026 19:31 - Salud

The Science Behind Mosquito Choices

For years, a popular belief circulated in Argentina and around the world that some people get more mosquito bites because they have sweeter blood. However, reports published on July 30, 2026 by major Argentine news outlets like Infobae and TN debunked this theory. According to Dr. Rubén Bueno, an entomologist from the University of Valencia, what truly attracts these insects are the chemical compounds they perceive on the skin surface, not the taste of the blood itself.

The specialist detailed that every person emits a unique combination of physical and chemical stimuli. The main attractants include the carbon dioxide (CO2) we exhale when breathing, as well as substances released by sweat and skin, such as lactic acid and octenol. This mixture creates a unique scent plume that can be more or less attractive to mosquitoes.

A Genetic Factor: Timothy C. Winegard, a professor at Colorado Mesa University, noted that approximately 85 percent of what makes us desirable or not to these insects is written into our DNA.

Why Do They Target Ankles and Ears?

Spanish biologist Manuel Peinado offered fascinating details about the specific body parts these vectors prefer. In an interview, the expert pointed out that mosquitoes tend to attack ankles mainly because of the sweat compounds concentrated in that area. Additionally, if you are tucked into bed, they will seek out your ears, another spot with abundant sweat glands.

Peinado also clarified that only females bite, as they need the blood nutrients to develop their eggs. Males, on the other hand, feed on nectar and plant liquids.

Bed Bugs vs. Mosquitoes: How to Tell Them Apart

  • Bed bug bites: They usually leave several marks very close together, forming a line, as the insect moves across the skin while feeding. They act almost exclusively at night.
  • Mosquito bites: Generally isolated lesions with swelling and itching. The tiger mosquito bites during the day and outdoors, while the common mosquito bites at night and inside homes.

Prevention: Enjoying the Season Without Risks

In South American countries like Argentina, climate change and globalization have brought new challenges, such as the expansion of the tiger mosquito, capable of transmitting diseases like dengue or West Nile fever. However, with a positive and comprehensive approach, we can easily protect ourselves:

💧 Eliminate standing water: Check patios and terraces. From a flowerpot saucer to a bottle cap can harbor dozens of larvae.

🧴 Use repellents: Apply products approved by health authorities, following label instructions.

👕 Appropriate clothing: Wear light-colored clothing that covers arms and legs, and use mosquito nets in good condition.

🩺 Medical consultation: If after a bite or a trip to tropical zones you experience fever, joint pain, or intense headache, it is recommended to seek medical care quickly to activate blocking protocols.
