Hand Arthritis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments to Regain Mobility and Well-Being

Hand Arthritis: Understanding the Pain to Regain Freedom of Movement

According to a report published on July 30, 2026 by Infobae, feeling persistent pain and stiffness in the fingers may indicate osteoarthritis of the hands. This condition compromises mobility and quality of life, but with the right information and treatment, significant improvement is possible. It affects half of women and a quarter of men before the age of 85.

What Is Hand Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (commonly called arthrosis) is a natural wear-and-tear process in the joints, often linked to trauma, overuse, or repetitive movements. According to experts cited in the specialized magazine Prevention, the resulting inflammation erodes the protective cartilage, leading to friction, pain, and stiffness when moving the fingers.

U.S. physician Dr. Tamika Henry, a family medicine expert and founder of the Unlimited Health Institute, explained that this condition typically affects three main areas: the base of the thumb, the small joints near the fingertips, and the middle joints of the fingers.

Key Risk Factors

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Levi Harrison pointed out that age is the primary risk factor, with people over 50 years old being more prone. Genetics and family history also play a role.

  • Sex and race: Influence the likelihood of developing the condition.
  • Overweight and obesity: Among the factors that increase risk.
  • Previous injuries: Dislocations or fractures often associated with sports.
  • Work environment: Jobs involving repetitive hand movements, such as hairdressing, cooking, music, or sewing.

Symptoms and Common Complications

Pain, stiffness, and difficulty moving the fingers are among the main complaints. The limitation in daily tasks, such as opening jars or cans, often worsens in the morning. Over time, it can lead to a burning sensation and sharp pain after prolonged use of the hands.

The Cleveland Clinic highlighted swelling, redness, and tenderness in the tissues. Crepitus (a grating sensation in the joint) and characteristic bony nodules, such as Bouchard's nodes (on the middle joints) and Heberden's nodes (near the fingertips), are also observed. Factors like stress, infections, and cold or rainy weather can aggravate symptoms.

Treatments: From Self-Care to Medical Intervention

The main goal of treatments is to reduce inflammation and improve mobility. According to Prevention, quitting smoking, losing weight, resting the joints, and adopting an anti-inflammatory diet (prioritizing plant-based foods and limiting alcohol and ultra-processed foods) help reduce flare-ups.

At-Home Relief Options:
  • Gels and patches: With nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for temporary relief.
  • Oral medications: Ibuprofen and acetaminophen as needed.
  • Cold/heat therapy: Ice packs and warm compresses.
  • Supplements: Turmeric, vitamin D, and omega-3 under medical supervision.
Professional Care:

The Mayo Clinic recommends occupational therapy to guide the use of ergonomic devices and hand exercises that preserve function. Rheumatologist Dr. Ritu Madan (Memorial Health) noted that steroid injections can provide relief in cases of severe pain. Surgical interventions are considered only in advanced stages.

Medical consultation is essential if swelling, joint heat, intense pain, or inability to move the fingers occurs.
