On Saturday, August 1, 2026, the remote province of La Rioja (northwestern Argentina) becomes the stage for a Peronist summit that aims to be the starting point for party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections. The occasion is the 50th anniversary of the murder of Bishop Enrique Angelelli, killed on August 4, 1976, during Argentina’s last military dictatorship. The main event will take place in Punta de los Llanos, where the new Parque Angelelli will be inaugurated.
Governor Ricardo Quintela invited all factions of the Partido Justicialista (PJ)—the main Peronist party—hoping to create a united front against the government of libertarian President Javier Milei. The religious ceremony at noon will be led by Marcelo Colombo, Archbishop of Mendoza and president of the Argentine Episcopal Conference, with bishops, pilgrims, and faithful from across the country.
The biggest news for the Kirchnerist wing is the confirmation of Máximo Kirchner (son of former presidents Néstor and Cristina Kirchner), who will lead the delegation of La Cámpora, the powerful youth political organization. According to national deputy Gabriela Pedrali, the event will see a significant turnout of political leaders and Church representatives.
Confirmed attendees include Germán Martínez (Chamber of Deputies leader) and José Mayans (Senate leader), along with deputies Cecilia Moreau, Gaby Estévez, Nancy Sand, Juan Carlos Molina, Blanca Osuna, Martín Aveiro, Jorge Chica, and Graciela Parola. Former senator Jorge Taiana and Sergio Palazzo, secretary of the powerful banking union La Bancaria, will also be present.
Quintela’s goal of seating all major Peronist figures on the same stage fell short. Axel Kicillof, governor of Buenos Aires province and a key Kirchnerist, decided not to travel. According to his inner circle, he prioritizes building a broad, federal opposition front that goes beyond Peronism, rather than staging a unity he considers superficial for a photo op.
Former presidential candidate Sergio Massa also declined, citing a family matter. These absences reflect the deep internal divisions within the party, which worsened after Buenos Aires deputy Facundo Tignanelli compared Kicillof to Augusto Vandor, a historic union leader who once advocated for a ‘Peronism without Perón’.
Amid this political realignment, deputy and national secretary of the PJ, Teresa García, confirmed in an interview that the party is working on a strategy to reverse the political disqualification of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and enable her to run again. We believe Cristina is the one who can best visualize the times ahead, she said.
The strategy operates on three fronts: territorial (accompanying her at her home in San José 1111, where she serves house arrest); judicial (handled by her legal team); and international (filing a complaint with the UN Human Rights Committee). The party has also secured the support of Rafael Valim, the Brazilian lawyer who successfully defended former President Lula da Silva. García defended the use of PASO (open, simultaneous, and mandatory primaries) as a mechanism to resolve internal disputes and stressed that Peronism must reconnect with working-class voters after its 2023 electoral defeat.
Deputy Pedrali emphasized that the event must keep its focus on Angelelli’s message, stating that we must continue to fight from love, and from love overcoming hate. She praised the new theme park as a boost for religious tourism, but also sharply criticized the recent visit of IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva to Argentina, accusing the national government of prioritizing debt payments over the lives of Argentines.
