A Life Devoted to Wildlife
Stephen Robert Irwin, known worldwide as Steve Irwin or The Crocodile Hunter, was born on February 22, 1962 in Upper Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia. Son of Bob and Lyn Irwin, both passionate about animals, he grew up surrounded by wildlife. In 1970, the family moved to Beerwah, Queensland, where they opened a reptile park that would later become the famous Australia Zoo.
From a very young age, Irwin showed a unique connection with animals: at 6 years old he received his first venomous snake, and by 9 he was already catching crocodiles alongside his father. This passion led him to take over the family park in 1991, and a year later, during his honeymoon with his wife Terri Raines, he filmed footage with crocodiles that became the first episode of his iconic series.
The Global Phenomenon of 'The Crocodile Hunter'
In 1996, The Crocodile Hunter premiered on Animal Planet, a show broadcast in more than 130 countries that captivated audiences of all ages with Irwin's charisma and boundless energy. His unique style, blending education and entertainment, made him a global ambassador for wildlife.
A Brilliant Career and a Tragic End
Beyond his series, Irwin participated in projects like Dr. Dolittle 2 (2001) alongside Eddie Murphy, and lent his voice to the animated film Happy Feet (2006). In 2002, together with Terri, he founded Wildlife Warriors, an organization dedicated to wildlife conservation.
On September 4, 2006, while filming the documentary Ocean's Deadliest at Batt Reef, off Port Douglas in the Great Barrier Reef, Irwin was attacked by a short-tail stingray. The animal's barb pierced his chest and reached his heart, causing his death at 44 years old. Australian police found no evidence of deliberate provocation, and although it was speculated that the ray mistook him for a tiger shark, that theory was never confirmed. The incident was captured on video but never released by family decision.
The Legacy That Endures: Bindi and Robert Irwin
Twenty years after his passing, his children Bindi Irwin (28 years old) and Robert Irwin (22 years old) are the guardians of his legacy. Bindi, who was only 8 when her father died, published an emotional Instagram message highlighting that "his legacy is love". Her daughter, Grace Warrior (5 years old), already watches her grandfather's documentaries, proving that Irwin's passion transcends generations.
Robert, for his part, shared photos and videos on social media, highlighting his father's passion and enthusiasm. Both continue to lead the Australia Zoo and Wildlife Warriors, alongside their mother Terri, who runs the zoo and keeps alive the conservation mission Steve started.
