A High-Stakes Legal Battle in Argentine Football

The Argentine Federal Cassation Court (Cámara Federal de Casación Penal, the highest criminal court in the country) has stepped back into a complex jurisdictional dispute surrounding an alleged money laundering operation. At the center of the scandal is a luxurious mansion in Pilar, a wealthy suburb north of Buenos Aires, valued at $17 million USD. The case has sent shockwaves through the sports world due to the suspected involvement of top executives from the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

According to a report by Infobae, the conflict over which court should handle the investigation has dragged on since the file's inception, bouncing between the Comodoro Py federal courts, the Penal Economic jurisdiction, and the federal courts of Zárate-Campana.

The Frontmen and the Appeal

In mid-May 2026, the Cassation Court had annulled the transfer of the case to the Federal Court of Campana, led by Judge Adrián González Charvay, ordering the dispute to be resolved in the National Penal Economic Chamber. Consequently, the case landed in Federal Penal Economic Court No. 10, overseen by Judge María Verónica Straccia.

However, the defense of the alleged frontmen (testaferros), Luciano Nicolás Pantano—a low-tier soccer executive—and his mother, Ana Lucía Conte, strongly opposed this move. Both appear on paper as the owners of the property through a company named Real Central SRL. Yet, prosecutors argue they never had the financial capacity to purchase the mansion, its luxury amenities, and a high-end collection of cars and motorcycles housed inside. Suspicion points directly at AFA President Claudio 'Chiqui' Tapia and Treasurer Pablo Toviggino as the true masterminds behind the frontmen.

The Grievance and the Court's Decision

Defense attorney Mariano Morán argued that transferring the case violated the constitutional guarantee of a 'natural judge' (the right to be tried by a competent, pre-established court). After being initially dismissed by Chamber A of the Penal Economic Court, Morán went directly to the Cassation Court through a grievance appeal (recurso de queja).

The tribunal has scheduled a critical hearing for August 12, 2026, at 11:30 AM. During this session, all parties will present their arguments before a final resolution is issued. This decision keeps the investigation's future wide open, determining whether the case will remain in the City of Buenos Aires or return to the Buenos Aires provincial jurisdiction.
