A Night of Fire Over Kyiv
In the early hours of August 5, 2026, Ukraine’s capital and several other regions endured one of the heaviest combined attacks of the war. Russian forces launched 35 missiles—including 4 Zircon/Onyx anti-ship missiles and 27 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles—along with 185 attack drones. The assault targeted Kyiv, Dnipro, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Poltava, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service and reports from Infobae, Cadena 3, and CNN.
The human cost was devastating: in the Darnytsia district, five people died while rushing to a bomb shelter, and two more were killed trying to help the wounded. Civilian infrastructure took heavy hits, including warehouses of major Ukrainian companies Rozetka, Epicentr, and the FOZZY group, where six employees lost their lives. The Lithuanian Embassy and an educational center were also damaged.
Why So Many Casualties? The Patriot Gap
Ukraine’s air defense systems managed to intercept 154 of the 185 drones, but only 1 out of 27 ballistic missiles was shot down. The reason, President Volodymyr Zelensky explained, is a severe shortage of interceptor missiles for the U.S.-made Patriot systems—the only weapons capable of stopping advanced Russian ballistic missiles like the Iskander.
“The ballistic interceptors could have saved the lives of those who died today. It is essential that our partners understand that delays in their delivery cause these terrible casualties.”
Zelensky recently met with U.S. President Donald Trump to request licenses for domestic production of Patriot interceptors, but Trump reportedly hesitated, citing national security concerns. The U.S. remains the primary supplier of these critical munitions.
Ukraine Strikes Back
In a retaliatory move, Ukrainian forces attacked warehouses of the Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries in the Moscow region, killing five people and wounding ten. Another drone strike hit Tula, with 107 drones reported downed. Additionally, the director of the Russian drone factory Uraldrone, Vladimir Tkachuk, was injured in a bomb attack in Sverdlovsk.
A Glimmer of Hope: Peace Talks on the Horizon
Amid the tragedy, diplomatic efforts are gaining momentum. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Washington will push to restart peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv in the coming weeks. There is even talk of sending Trump’s envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, to Kyiv. While the path to a ceasefire remains uncertain, these signals offer a ray of hope that the bloodshed may eventually give way to dialogue.
