Crisis in the Democratic Party: Graham Platner Leaves the Senate Race

July 8, 2026

Graham Platner, 41 years old, was one of the great promises of the Democratic Party in the state of Maine. A Marine veteran, oyster farmer, and backed by prominent figures like Bernie Sanders, he had won the primaries and was shaping up to be a tough rival for Republican Senator Susan Collins. However, a sexual assault allegation radically changed the course of his career.

The Allegation That Toppled the Campaign

The controversy erupted when a woman identified as Jenny Racicot told Politico and CNN that Platner entered her home without authorization while they were having a casual relationship. In the interview, Racicot stated that he forced himself sexually on her despite her requests to stop, describing the episode as a rape.

Platner's Defense

On July 8, 2026, Platner posted a video of over 11 minutes on his X account (formerly Twitter) to announce the suspension of his candidacy. There he argued that the allegations against him are categorically false. This decision is incredibly difficult because I know some will think it is an admission of guilt, and it definitely is not, he stated. He assured that his withdrawal is due to the political consequences of the case and not the accusation itself, and he will begin the process to formally withdraw his name from the ballot.

What Happens Now in Maine?

State law gives the Democratic Party until July 27, 2026 to select a new candidate to face Susan Collins in the legislative elections on November 3.

A Candidate with a Complex History

Before this controversy, Platner had faced scrutiny over old internet posts and allegations from former partners about problematic behavior. According to Newsweek, the politician himself had spoken publicly about the difficulties he faced after his military service, including post-traumatic stress and issues related to alcohol consumption, acknowledging some past mistakes while rejecting other accusations.
