NATO Summit: From Tension to Reconciliation with Trump in Ankara

09/07/2026 07:23 - Internacionales

A Shift Towards Reconciliation in Ankara

The 36th NATO Summit is taking place in Ankara, Turkey, and has become a stage for mood swings by the US President, Donald Trump. What began as an expression of disappointment over the lack of European support in the conflict with Iran (which started on February 28, 2026), turned into gestures of reconciliation that excite international diplomacy.

For those unfamiliar, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is an intergovernmental military alliance between member states. Trump stated he was testing the European allies, but surprised with a positive announcement: the US will evaluate the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey and lift the sanctions imposed in 2019 due to the purchase of a Russian S-400 missile system, reopening a chapter of strategic cooperation.

A Historic Goal for Defense

The two-day summit has a central and transformative objective: to increase the military spending of member countries to 5% of their GDP by 2035. This step represents a renewed commitment to strengthen collective security and stability in a rapidly changing world.

Ukraine's Plea

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is attending the summit with a request focused on peace and the protection of his people: $80 billion annually in aid and Patriot missiles. His plea takes on relevance following a Russian attack with 29 ballistic missiles that left 26 dead in Kyiv and Vyshneve.

International diplomacy continues its course, seeking paths to de-escalation and cooperation for a safer future. Original news in La Nacion
