A Controversial Move from the White House
On August 1, 2026, Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), the parent company of the social network Truth Social, officially launched a new data subscription service called Truth API. This system allows companies and trading firms on Wall Street to access posts from President Donald Trump and other prominent accounts before the general public, for a fee reaching $100,000 per month.
How Does Truth API Work?
According to TMTG’s interim CEO, Kevin McGurn, the Application Programming Interface (API) is designed to provide a "direct, licensed, real-time" stream of the most market-influential posts. By allowing certain financial players to see "Truths" ahead of everyone else, the service opens the door to potential advantages in trading stocks, bonds, and interest rates.
Trump’s account, @realDonaldTrump, is the largest on the platform with approximately 13 million followers. The president frequently uses it to announce crucial policy decisions that directly impact global financial markets.
Accusations of Corruption and Market Manipulation
The launch has ignited intense debate. Government ethics experts and opposition lawmakers quickly raised concerns. Democratic Senators Adam Schiff and Elizabeth Warren sent a letter on the Tuesday prior to the launch to SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) Chairman Paul Atkins, requesting an investigation into whether the company is violating securities laws.
"This appears to be an outrageous abuse of the office of the President for his personal benefit that undermines everyday investors and the integrity of our markets, while enriching Wall Street and other privileged insiders," the senators wrote.
Kathleen Clark, a government conflict-of-interest expert at the University of Washington, called the move "flagrant corruption" and an "improper exploitation of governmental power to enrich himself."
Trump’s Financial Context
The move comes at a delicate time for the president’s business empire. TMTG shares have fallen more than 70% since he took office last year, wiping out about $6 billion in shareholder value. However, Trump’s annual financial disclosures show he generated over $1 billion in revenue last year through his businesses and cryptocurrencies.
Trump, who owns approximately 53% of TMTG through a trust, remains a majority shareholder and could directly benefit from Truth API revenues. Although conflict-of-interest laws typically exempt the president and vice president, all previous presidents acted as if the law applied to them—something Trump has refused to do.
What is Truth Social?
Truth Social is a social media platform launched in February 2022 by Trump Media and Technology Group. It was created as a conservative alternative to Twitter (now X) after Trump was banned from major platforms following the January 6 Capitol riot. The platform uses the term "Truths" for posts and "Re-Truths" for shares.
What’s Next?
The SEC has not yet publicly responded to the senators’ request. Meanwhile, the debate over whether this is a legitimate business innovation or a conflict of interest continues to divide political and financial circles. For international observers, this case highlights the unique intersection of U.S. presidential power, social media, and financial markets.
