The planet's most recognized illusionist closes a historic chapter in his career and prepares for new, exciting challenges.
According to Yahoo, David Seth Kotkin, globally known as David Copperfield, was born on September 16, 1956, in Metuchen, New Jersey. He discovered his passion for magic at age 12, later becoming the youngest member of the Society of American Magicians. His stage name pays homage to the famous Charles Dickens novel, David Copperfield.
Throughout his extensive career, the illusionist achieved unforgettable milestones. In 1983, he stunned the world by making the Statue of Liberty (an iconic American monument located in New York Harbor) vanish. In 1987, he doubled down with a spectacular escape from Alcatraz, the notorious maximum-security federal prison on an island in San Francisco Bay. His talent has earned him 21 Emmy Awards and 11 Guinness World Records.
Copperfield relationship with Las Vegas, the globally famous entertainment capital in the Nevada desert, began in the 1980s at Caesars Palace. In 2003, he launched his iconic show An Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, one of the largest and most prestigious resorts on the Las Vegas Strip, which became his second home for over two decades.
On his Instagram account, the magician announced that April 30, 2026, was his final performance at the MGM. Over 25 years, he managed to amaze more than 7 million people from nearly every country. It is the biggest project I have ever undertaken, and also the most challenging, he expressed with optimism about his future.
In the 1990s, his love life grabbed headlines. In 1993, during an event in Berlin, he met German supermodel Claudia Schiffer, one of the most iconic faces of the 90s fashion world. Their relationship lasted from 1994 to 1999, including an engagement that ultimately did not lead to marriage.
Later, Copperfield found stability with fashion designer Chloe Gosselin, with whom he shares his life and is a father to three children: Dylan, Audrey, and Sky. According to Forbes magazine, the magician has amassed a net worth of 875 million dollars, the fruit of 50 years of a successful career.
Despite his overwhelming success, recent years brought significant challenges. In 2024, the British newspaper The Guardian published an investigation featuring testimonies from 16 women who accused him of inappropriate sexual conduct, including Brittney Lewis for an incident in 1988. Copperfield and his lawyers denied the accusations.
Additionally, his name appeared in the unsealed documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case. These controversies led him to postpone a project to make the moon disappear in February 2024, in collaboration with the NGO Save The Children. However, with the announcement of his retirement from Las Vegas and the promise of a new magical project, David Copperfield demonstrates his resilience and his desire to leave obstacles behind to continue creating illusion and hope in the world.
