Fire at Tolosa Substation: A Blackout That Shook La Plata
An incident at the Tolosa transformer substation, operated by Edelap, triggered a widespread power outage that affected much of the city of La Plata and several towns in the Greater La Plata area during the early hours of Monday, August 17, 2026.
The fire broke out around 2:30 AM at the facility located on Calle 9 between 527 and 528, in the Tolosa neighborhood. According to initial reports, an overheating event caused two transformer columns to collapse, leading to an explosion and subsequent fire.
At least four firefighting units responded and managed to control the flames inside the station, though cooling operations continued for several hours. The fire caused the collapse of a 7-meter wall separating the facility from a neighboring house, and firefighters had to use water from a private swimming pool after exhausting their own supply, as a resident told the program Arriba Argentinos (eltrece).
Affected Areas and Chaos on the Highway
The blackout affected large sections of La Plata's urban core and the neighborhoods of Tolosa, Ringuelet, Villa Castells, San Carlos, José Hernández, and Gonnet. The outage extended from the hypermarkets on Centenario and Belgrano avenues to 7th and 38th streets, according to the newspaper El Día.
One of the most critical points was the last stretch of the Buenos Aires–La Plata highway, which was plunged into complete darkness overnight due to the power failure, creating hazardous conditions for drivers in the area.
Users on social media reported outages in central zones, including the courthouse area, and difficulty filing complaints through Edelap's usual channels. The WhatsApp customer service system collapsed, returning automatic messages like: "We're sorry, there was a problem and we couldn't retrieve your supply information. The technical claim process has been suspended."
Evacuations and Community Assistance
As a preventive measure, residents of nearby buildings were evacuated, according to Edelap's first official statement. The fire produced a thick column of smoke and a strong smell of burnt rubber noticeable across much of the Tolosa neighborhood.
A resident told Infobae he was called to help his brother-in-law, who lives next to the substation and has mobility issues: "I saw a huge number of firefighters and flames," he recounted. During the operation, pets were rescued and elderly residents were assisted.
Edelap's Statement: Priority to Essential Services
Around 8:40 AM, Edelap issued its first official report confirming the fire and the containment efforts. The company stated that the fire is under control and that it was extinguished thanks to the joint action of firefighters, municipal Civil Defense, and company technicians.
In the statement, the distributor said it "is working on reconfiguring its network to normalize supply, prioritizing essential services, including health facilities." It also announced a plan for gradual restoration for the remaining affected users, involving a large team of technical personnel and generator sets.
So far, the total number of affected users has not been determined. The company apologized to residents for the inconvenience and committed to keeping the community informed through its official channels.
Context: A Company Serving Over 400,000 Users
Edelap is the electricity distributor operating in La Plata, Berisso, Ensenada, and part of the region, with a concession area of 5,700 square kilometers and over 400,000 users (more than 1,000,000 people). The Tolosa substation is one of the most important in the network, supplying a large portion of the city center and the northern zone.
Interestingly, the company had announced scheduled outages for Monday in the area of streets 8 to 11 and 50 to 53 for maintenance work, which were ultimately suspended due to the fire. Additionally, Edelap had recently performed maintenance on the high-voltage networks at the Tolosa Transformer Station to optimize service for more than 45,000 users in the region.
The incident comes amid growing user complaints about service quality, with frequent outages in various neighborhoods over recent weeks. The investigation into the fire's causes is ongoing, and more details on the full restoration timeline are expected in the coming hours.
