Orange Alert for Severe Storms: How the Weather Will Unfold This Weekend in Argentina

31/07/2026 18:14 - Actualidad

A Day of Contrasts and Welcome Rain

On July 31, 2026, Argentina is waking up to an active and fascinating meteorological scenario. According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), a wide swath of central Argentina is under alert due to the arrival of strong storms, occasional hail, and gusts that could reach 90 kilometers per hour.

The phenomenon, driven by a process called cyclogenesis, creates an extraordinary thermal contrast of nearly 40 degrees Celsius across the country: while southern Argentina wakes up with temperatures near -10 °C, in the far north tropical air pushed readings close to 30 °C in towns of Formosa before 8 a.m.

What is cyclogenesis?

It is the formation or intensification of a low-pressure system. These systems foster instability, rain, and strong winds, and are essential for the water cycle and air renewal in the atmosphere.

The Situation in La Plata and the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA)

The most delicate conditions are expected over eastern Buenos Aires province, including the Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (AMBA), southern Santa Fe, and southern Entre Ríos, where an orange alert is in effect. Locally intense storms are expected, with the possibility of exceeding 50 millimeters of accumulated water in short periods.

In the city of La Plata, the first rains arrived with force during the morning. As of 1:30 p.m. on July 31, the recorded accumulations showed a good amount of water revitalizing the region:

  • Villa Elvira 19.06 mm
  • Villa Elisa 14.89 mm
  • San Carlos 15.89 mm
  • San Lorenzo 15.10 mm
  • Plaza Moreno 14.20 mm

Although the probability of severe phenomena exists, authorities recommend avoiding outdoor activities during the storm, not taking shelter under trees or power poles, and staying away from doors and windows.

Weekend: The Sun and Calm Return

The good news is that the instability will not last all weekend. Storms will continue until the early hours of Saturday, but as the hours pass, the weather will improve notably, leaving an ideal climate to rest and enjoy.

Saturday, August 1

Cloudy to partly cloudy skies, no chance of rain for the rest of the day.

Low: 14 °C | High: 19 °C
Sunday, August 2

Mostly cloudy and cool, no chance of precipitation.

Low: 10 °C | High: 15 °C
