Historic Central Bank Reform: A New Era for Argentina's Economy

21/07/2026 22:29 - Economia

A Historic Shift for the Argentine Central Bank

After a brief pause for the 2026 World Cup, the Casa Rosada (Argentina's presidential palace) is back in the political arena with a project designed to shield the country's monetary stability for the long haul.

Key Strategy Meeting for the Second Half of the Year

On July 21, 2026, the national government resumed its legislative agenda with a high-level meeting led by Karina Milei, Cabinet Chief Diego Santilli, and Minister of Economy Luis Caputo. The main objective: to coordinate the communication and timeline for sending a package of reforms to Congress, headlined by the modification of the Organic Charter of the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA).

According to official sources cited by local media like TN and Radio Mitre, the official announcement could be made as early as next week. There is even an evaluation of having President Javier Milei deliver the news via a national broadcast, a press conference, or a specific economic event, signaling a high political impact, though ruling out the president addressing the Congressional floor as he did with the Budget.

What the Reform Aims to Achieve

  • Single Mandate: Preserve the value of the currency.
  • Prohibition: Ban Treasury financing through money printing.
  • Sanctions: Penalize officials who authorize money issuance.
  • Independence: Greater stability for the bank's directory.

Project Details and Expert Perspectives

The project seeks to undo modifications introduced in 2012 during the administration of Mercedes Marcó del Pont, which expanded the BCRA's objectives to include goals like employment and social equity. The new Organic Charter would prohibit the Central Bank from assisting the Treasury, toughen sanctions for those authorizing money printing to finance the state, and establish stricter rules for removing the bank's president and board members.

According to Urgente24, the Fundación Capital celebrated this progress and suggested incorporating regulations for virtual assets and digital currencies (such as stablecoins and tokenization), looking at examples from Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil. They also recommended eliminating interim appointments to ensure the board's independence and reducing the number of members so that monetary policy transcends the current administration.
