Polar Wave in Mendoza: Province-Wide Suspension of Classes

Date: July 2, 2026

The General Directorate of Schools (DGE) of Mendoza announced the suspension of in-person classes for the morning of Thursday, July 2, 2026, across the entire provincial territory. This measure was taken in response to weather forecasts anticipating sub-zero temperatures, snow, rain, and strong winds, which make access roads to educational institutions impassable.

Weather Context and Alerts

Mendoza, a prominent Argentine province located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, is currently facing an intense polar wave. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued an orange alert for heavy snow in the mountains and sleet in other areas. Accumulations of 5 to 10 cm of snow are expected, along with winds that could reach 100 km/h. Temperatures will drop to -5°C in some areas, with highs not exceeding 4 or 5°C in Greater Mendoza.

Continuous Educational Activity

Despite the suspension of in-person attendance, school activities have not stopped. Classes are being held virtually through the Escuela Digital Mendoza platform, a local digital initiative ensuring pedagogical continuity for all students. This proactive approach guarantees that children can learn safely from the warmth of their homes.

Preventive Measure
Civil Defense Recommendation

The DGE made this decision following recommendations from the Civil Defense Directorate to protect students, teachers, and families from the extreme weather.

Road Conditions
Impassable Roads

Ice on the pavement and snowfall complicate traffic. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary trips and take extreme precautions if they must go out.
